im planning to do this cause i cant find catnip anywhere.. sigh...
Can i substitute the normal mint plant for catnip?
Hi there again...catnip is the only mint plant which contains the ingredient "nepetalactone". None of the other mint plants can produce the same results which is why catnip variety (Nepeta cataria) is very effective for cats.
Here's another helpful idea...I found website for Philippine Cat Lovers Society. They most likely will know where one could purchase the live plant or seeds: http://www.pcls.com.ph/
Also consider joining this Yahoo group which is for Philippine cat owners: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/magpupusa/... You will be able to post a question here once you've joined (free membership) and find someone who may have answer to locate the catnip plant.
Reply:Catnip is in the mint family but I don't think a cat would accept it as a cat exciting drug. Look on-line for catnip or go to a large nursery that might have that variety of herbs.
Substituting like that is equivalent to if you had a druggie friend who was looking for "grass" and you told him you have a whole lawn of grass.
Reply:Where do you live? Catnip is a very hardy plant. Grow your own.

The trick is to keep cat off the immature plant seedling until it grows into something worthwhile. If you plant it out side every stray in the neighbor hood shows up. Plant it inside in a big pot in a room the cats don't go in. It's pretty.
Reply:You can try it but I don't think it will have an effect. You can't sub powdered sugar to a crack head
Reply:No, we grew it, and the cats were like immune to it. You must find cat nip, and better yet, if they have had only canned cat nip, they might not like the fresh stuff. Cats can get pretty picky sometimes.
Reply:Nope while catnip is in th mint family....regular mint doesn't have the same effect. Sorry.
Reply:You can by it on-line. Cat's won't respond to mint like they do to 'nip.
There is something in cat nip that smells like a cat pheromone and that is what sets the little guys off!
Reply:Since you are so into wanting to know about cat nip here are some site
