Reply:Best way to have it is to mix it up THE NIGHT BEFORE, or the 1st Friday in May....that way you can enjoy it around 10:00am for the Derby.

'Bout a two fist fulls of FRESH mint julips from your grocery store. Then chop them up coarsly. Throw it into a big ol' punch bowl, throw in a handle of Jim Beam, let it soak over night. Scoop and strain into a high ball glass with ice. Eh, it is an acquired taste. I perfer my bourbon on the rocks, but have to have a Julip at the Derby.
Reply:A real mint julep is made with bourbon and it tastes NASTY! We tried making them last summer but the fresh mint wasn't strong enough to cover the taste of the bourbon. Yuck. I suppose if you were to buy pre-made mint syrup and maybe add some Fresca it would be okay but you gotta like Bourbon to start with.
Reply:You will need:

2 cups granulated sugar

2 cups water (branch water is ideal)

Fresh Mint

Crushed Ice

Kentucky Bourbon (2 ounces per serving)

Make a simple mint syrup* by boiling sugar and water together for 5 minutes; cool. Place in a covered container with 6 or 8 bruised mint sprigs. Refrigerate overnight.

Make a julep by filling a julep cup* or glass with crushed ice, then adding 1 tablespoon of mint syrup and 2 ounces of bourbon. Stir rapidly with a spoon to frost outside of cup or glass. Garnish with a fresh mint sprig..

*This makes enough syrup for about 44 juleps.
Reply:all good recipies! Just make sure you use good fresh mint and "muddle" well. I make mine by the glass. I put a little over a tablespoon of sugar and a few mint leaves in my glass, muddle well, toss in a couple ice cubes, about 2 shots of bourbon and a splash of spritzer (sprite works good in a pinch). Serve in a collins glass.
