How come Walkers 'lamb and mint' and 'steak and onion' crisps are suitable for vegetarians?

This may seem a really dumb question but it just seems a bit wierd that meat crisps so how don't contain meat. I know we have artificial colourings and falvouring but...

How do they go about copying an animal fat?

Thanks, x

How come Walkers 'lamb and mint' and 'steak and onion' crisps are suitable for vegetarians?
In looking at the ingredients, I would not find them suitable-they contain lamb powder, which would be made from dehydrated lamb stock. Here are the ingredients

Potatoes, sunflower oil (33%) , lamb %26amp; mint flavour [maltodextrin (from wheat), whey powder (from milk), hydrolysed soya protein, flavourings, cream powder, lactose (from milk), hydrolysed protein (from wheat), vinegar powder (from barley), dextrose (from wheat), flavour enhancers (monosodium glutamate, disodium inosinate), colour (paprika extract), lamb powder], salt.

I think Walkers just markets them irresponsibly, like many other companies do.

As a vegetarian, I would not eat them, personally
Reply:I don't think it is a 'nature identical' copy of lamb fat. It is likely to be paprika, milk powder yeast extract and sunflower oil. (I can't eat many flavours crisps 'cos I'm a vegan, they nearly all contain milk powder! I have to really fancy some , even then I will buy some 'soy crispy' rice cakes instead)
Reply:They grow special potatoes now whose genes have been altered so that they taste almost eactly like lamb. They have only been available since 1997 so it is a relatively new process.
Reply:Artificial flavours
Reply:Weird, isn't it? And yet at Christmas I bought a packet of Walkers special edition crisps - think it was white wine %26amp; mushroom, or something. Sounds disgusting, but it was Christmas! Anyway, for once I didn't check the packet, and when I got it home I realised that it didn't say suitable for vegetarians. Can't remember what the ingredient was now. Anyway, I emailed Walkers to ask why but got no useful response, just a list of their products that are suitable for vegetarians.
Reply:Last time I looked the lamb ones weren't OK for veggies. All the other flavours were though EXCEPT CHEESE AND ONION! Just shows how much rubbishy chemicals are in these things.
Reply:It's good if your a vegetarian the only downside is they tend to use about a thousand additives to get the flavour so it probably isn't that healthy.

They are no good for me though as I'm vegan.
